Return to the Dunes

Decided to go for a series of dune caches in the vicinity of Beale, Butterfield and Saunders lakes. This would be several miles - haven’t done any long dune hikes in quite awhile.

Started the day with a visit with Duck-n-Deedy at the Riley Ranch county campground prior to heading out across the dunescape! After my visit, I found a cache Under Duck’s Nose then parked the pickup and struck out for the dunes.

First on my list was Cache Me If You Can - a puzzle cache with some rather obscure directions and clues. I was hoping to figure it out once at GZ - silly me! After walking 1.5 miles in the sand I arrive at the coords only to discover that I was supposed to find a clue BEFORE getting that far! Well, I knew that already but I didn’t see anything matching the clue on my walk out. So I spent the next hour just walking around within a quarter-mile trying to catch a glimpse of the “clue” - no luck! Finally just gave up and hiked on back to the pickup too tired and frustrated to attempt the other caches that lay two miles north of me. It appears the hider of this cache assumed an approach from the south….I had approached from the north! Would have been nice to know!

Oh well, it was a vigorous 4 mile hike and I was able to check on a nearby Mackie cache while I was out there. Will attempt this another day.
