Nyuk’n It Up in Florence
Ever since failing at a FTF attempt for Shrimp a few weeks ago, I’ve been itching to get back up here to get this group of caches on the Siuslaw River side of the south jetty area. Got it this time but I came armed with a hint from Mackie. Continued with Moe, Larry and Curly (Nyuk, Nyuk). Finished off the area with a bushwhack through scotchbroom and pine thickets to get Bee Hive
The real goal of the day was next…..finding a land route to Mackie’s Cliffhanger cache on the northmost bend in the Umpqua River before it empties to the Pacific. He placed it via kayak. I had researched the area earlier and discovered an old logging road from the ridge above down to the river’s edge. Timing my hike with low tide, I parked just off Sparrow Park road and headed down the brushy old road. Thankfully, locals had maintained a brushed trail else I would have been a bloody mess fighting the blackberry vines. Made it down to the waters edge pretty quickly then had to turn west and walk the cliff edge among the jumble of rocks. Shamefully, I had to call Mackie for a hint ‘cause I wasn’t finding the container. I blame it on the vertical cliffs giving my GPSr problems! Yeah…that sounds good!
