North Umpqua River
Pat and I wanted to find some fall colors to photograph and do a little geocaching today. We picked the North Umpqua River east of Roseburg. It should have an abundance of Bigleaf Maple’s turning gold.
After photo stops at the Colliding Rivers (Glide), the Narrows (Idleyld) and a nice river-side county park we to hiked the Susan Creek Falls Trail. This trail is a very easy grade and really well maintained. Nearly a mile up to the falls with an additional third of a mile further to reach the Susan Creek Indian Mounds. Both sites were impressive. There was a geocache and letterbox occupying the same hidey hole just before getting to the falls. We both really liked this trail.

We continued east as far as Horseshoe Bend making geocache and/or photo stops at the the historic Mott Bridge, a kayak put-in at Steamboat and a short portion of the 77-mile long North Umpqua Trail. That trail was just calling for exploration. Next summer I’ll get back over here and hike more significant sections of it.
Caches found today:
Susan
Horseshoe
Panther P
Elegance
Susan’s Raft Area
Gravel Bin
Troubled Waters 2009
Suicidal Tendencies
This really is a beautiful area - we decided to bring the trailer over here next summer and spend a week! So much more to see!
