California Cachin’
Camping at Alfred A. Loeb State Park up the Chetco River from Brookings, OR this weekend.
Today was a day trip down to Jedediah Smith State Park in CA. Picked up eight caches while in Del Norte County between Trees of Mystery and the OR/CA border. Mostly goober caches.

19.4 Miles Dune Hiking with family explorer!!
Rod and I had the day off and decided to get a start on mackie’s new Oregon Walkabout 3 cache.
We thought we’d be really efficient and hunt two other newer caches before embarking on the BIG ONE. So we parked in Duck-n-Deedy’s parking lot and headed out for Beale Lake cache and another new one nearby. After a couple of “short-cuts” trying to avoid sand roads, one back-track, breaking my favorite hiking staff and Rod getting his feet wet crossing a small boggy area so he could find a better place for me to cross........ we had those two caches found and logged and headed over to the beach to start the BIG ONE. We had logged over four miles already as we approached the initial waypoint!! It was going to be a looooooong day!!
Now I’m not going to reveal too much about the rest of the day since we have not finished the trek but I will say we got as far as waypoint #7 (of 11) before calling it for the day. When we finally arrived at our pre-positioned vehicle I checked my GPSr trip meter - 19.4 miles on the day! Yikes! I don’t think I’ve EVER done that much walking in one day - let alone on sand!
It was a grand adventure - and yet to be completed........so until then..............

Checking on Hanging Rock
Came to Hanging Rock with Greg Blackwell, Gloria Blackwell and Tim Ellison while camping in Powers with the Koinonia 2008 crowd.
The cache was still in great shape with a few more signatures - but not many!
Also stopped in to check on my Elk Creek Falls cache - all is well.

Caching with My New iPhone!!
My wife and I both upgraded to the new iPhone 3G yesterday and we’re enjoying them a great deal - like finding a geocache with one!
The iPhone has a great map application. I simply did a “search” on the map using the coordinates of the cache then just started walking towards the pushpin it created. The phone’s location is marked by a pulsing little blue dot. I zoomed the map to a point where I could see both the cache’s pushpin and the blue dot. As we neared the cache I kept zooming in for greater detail. It doesn’t give distance to the cache but having it on the map is enough.
Some screen shots from the iPhone..........
(Red Pin is the Cache, Blue Dot is us) Getting there.......
Almost there....... just a few more feet!!!!
GOTTA LOVE TECHNOLOGY!!!!!
