Geocaching “Sandwich”
A really fun day of hunting geocaches with Rod of Family Explorer “sandwiched” between breakfast and dinner geo-events.
First was Geo-Breakfast in Bandon. A fun group of sleepy-eyed cachers getting caffeine’d and carb’d up for all-day caching. I offered a twist on the days activities with a game of geo-golf to supplement regular caching. I had a few takers but most folks already had their day planned.
After breakfast people headed out for a day of caching. Rod and I had plans to hike in the dunes mostly with a few other caches scattered from Coos Bay to Tahkentich Lake. We started with the cache behind the Blossom Gulch school on a nature trail then we headed for the North Spit. This dune hike would take out the sand road to the Oyster Cove cache then north across dunes to Camp Castaway and Tsunami Island caches. This was just shy of five miles.
Next stop was a tough new Mackie cache, Forgotten Campground, near Lakeside which required “special equipment” I suspected we would need. As we returned to the vehicle, norway sprint and ST13PILOT showed up on their bikes. Well, we couldn’t bring ourselves to just say hi then drive off knowing what we knew about the cache! So we delayed our trek north a few minutes and gave them moral support and technical aid. Finally, we hunted a group of caches just north of Reedsport before returning to Winchester Bay for the dinner event.
Completed the Geo-Sandwich day with Geo-Dinner in Winchester Bay. Wow! More than double the breakfast crowd! We had a great time giving out prizes, eating pizza and sharing the days excursions. One team of cachers, Peekaboo21, took the geo-golf game VERY seriously and completed the course with a pretty impressive score and took home an ammo can as their prize.
