Pat was looking for a place to get out on this nice sunny day and get some pictures…..I suggested the Elk viewing area and lower Umpqua river…...just so happens there are four new caches up there! I just love how our addictions of geocaching and photography meld so well together!

Started with Sunken Grade cache just east of Reedsport up Schofield Creek. Then went to the Dean Creek Elk viewing area for the next two caches. Finished the group off with the Mill Creek cache 13 miles east of Reedsport where one turns south to Loon Lake.

After two nights at Silver Falls SP and sending our grandson off with his dad, we stayed a night in Portland to visit with my daughter and her husband.

Our path home would take us over to the coast at Lincoln City in order to pick up things we left at a motel there recently and to have a whole bunch of coastline to enjoy and capture on film (well, in digital form really). It also meant some geocaching could be done too! Let’s not forget about that!

I stopped for several caches in the beautiful forested Van Duzer Scenic Corridor along Highway 18. No caching in Lincoln City as we stopped briefly to retrieve our items from the motel. Continuing down the coast we took photo ops breaks at Depoe Bay, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Nye Beach district of Newport and finally a nice sunset view at the Heceta Head Lighthouse north of Florence.

Pat and I had an opportunity to take our grandson (who lives in NYC these days) for a couple of days and we jumped at it! We decided rather than waste much of our time together driving to and from Portland twice, we would just rent a cabin at Silver Falls SP and do things with Elliot in that picturesque setting. Lots of trails to hike and waterfalls to view - the famed Trail of Ten Falls.

So we picked him up in Portland yesterday and headed out to the cabin. Checked in, unpacked and fixed some dinner. Got the park maps out and planned our day. It was very strange to head to bed at 8pm! I guess not having our normal access to TV and internet will do that!

Thursday was our only full day in the park and it began with a morning trip over to the historic South Falls Lodge built in the 1930’s to see if we could get a cup of coffee. No luck - winter hours were in effect! So we just walked down to the nearby South Falls viewpoint for some pictures and two geocaches. We didn’t continue down the 6 mile loop since we had walked that loop back in May of last year with my daughter and her husband. Instead, we headed over to the North Falls loop. This trail loop was about three miles total and showcased four nice waterfalls and two geocaches. It was a very nice, sunny winter day making the hike extremely enjoyable. In the summer, these trails are just wall to wall people….really like doing these hikes in winter especially on days like this!

Finding a cache near North Falls

After finishing our hike, we headed on into the nearby town of Silverton for some dinner and a couple of groceries. Someone recommended a little mexican place called Los Girasoles. The burritos were HUGE and very tasty! Back at the cabin we stayed up later than last night…...uh… 9pm! Wow, night owls!

This park has some really nice trails I would like to come back and explore - not a lot of geocaches but the ones here are nicely done and get you out on these trails.

Left the park early morning to get Elliot back to Portland to meet up with his Dad. Before leaving however, Elliot and I snuck out on a frost covered trail for a nearby cache called Green Giant!.

Continuing with my intention to find all geocaches in the coastal dunes on foot, my objective today was three caches in the general vicinity of Saunders Lake and Clear Lake.

I used the public parking access to Butterfield Lake within Riley Ranch county campground as my staging area. It would be nearly 1.75 miles before arriving at the first of the three - Bling with an Attitude. Took a few minutes to find because I didn’t read the hint and description CAREFULLY!

Approaching the Mushroom Tree

Number two cache - The Windfall Cache - was another full mile northward. It was a pretty easy container to spot and had my signature in the log book quickly. Rescued a TB whose goal was to visit ICE skating rinks around the world - seemed like the right thing to do since it was currently stuck in the middle of miles of sand dunes!

The third and final cache for the day - Trash or Treasure - took me another half-mile to the SE (thankfully, that’s back towards my vehicle!). This was the most intriguing hunt of the day. It involved discovering a uniquely shaped tree and trying to decipher cryptic description and hints. Upon arriving at GZ I had to wait out a family of ATVr’s stopping for a bite to eat and photo op with the aforementioned tree. Once they were gone I emerged from hiding and finally spotted the clues and eventually found the cache container….as advertised. Back to the truck now…..

Lunch Break at the Octopus Tree

Total mileage for today’s adventure was 6.4 miles. It was an invigorating and satisfying hike. I know better than to say “Whew!, now I don’t need to go back out there again….good to have those caches done” Oooops! Said it, didn’t I? I’m sure it won’t be long before a new one gets placed right in the middle of this area now that I’ve cleared it out! (Update: Yup, new cache published in this same area 6 days later! - Told ya!)

Pat and I decided to get away for the weekend and settled on Lincoln City. I wanted to attend THIS geocaching event and Pat wanted photo ops of the central Oregon coast.

Given the weather forecast we left the trailer home. Pat trusted me to make some motel reservations….not sure she’ll let me do that again! I had a recommendation to try the Historic Anchor Inn in the Taft area. The price of $49 per night raised her eyebrows but was willing to give it a try. It is a very old set of buildings which they are currently upgrading. I’m not sure we’d stay there again but not because it was unclean, noisy or anything awful - the rooms just weren’t very conducive to our taste and gadget-centric lifestyle. On the other hand, I might still be enticed to stay here in the future if for nothing more than that fantastic gourmet and complimentary breakfast!

Motel Room at Anchor Inn

Found four caches on the drive up Friday including one in a piratey-themed series by yachatswalker - Pirate Treasure – Blackbeard.

Saturday morning after our gourmet breakfast we headed over to the event. Unlike our local events that center around EATING, this one simply lined out a list of caches and virtual locations to visit in order to earn a nice geocoin. So we got our list and headed out to get the job done. The real caches were newly placed in a very nice “open area” in the Spring Lake area of town. I’m sure I heard the trails wailing and moaning at the huge crowd of over 200 participants pounding over them all day long! I noticed several south coast cachers also attending this event - Butch n Beckie, Sureloc, geopower.

Once we completed our tasks we returned to pick the well-earned geocoin. Then off to photo ops for Pat - glad she was patient with my geo-obsession!

I did manage to find some geocaches as we explored south to Cape Foulweather and back including this nice cache in Depoe Bay.

Sunday morning brought another awesome breakfast at the motel then we began heading home taking our time for photo ops and geocaches. Fun weekend!

Today Rod of Family Explorer and I attended a half-day seminar in Albany then spent the afternoon caching around the area.

Finally, we got on our way home and managed to pick off a few caches along the way including Harold Woolly Bridge - a tough one to find in the dark.

On Land at Umpqua City

I had previously found Cliffhanger and Umpqua City via hiking but doing them again by kayak was going to be fun. I’ve been wanting to get more time in a kayak so I could decide what kind to buy for myself this spring.

We broke it into two trips. First put-in was in Winchester Bay where Darren and I received some basic kayaking instructions from Eric. Our first cache, Beached, was only a few hundred feet from our put-in and we shortly had “beached” and found the cache. Back into the calm Umpqua River waters we needed to cross to the north side for the Umpqua City cache. The cache was within 200 feet of the river shore and was found quickly. Returned to the put-in, loaded the kayaks and headed to the Gardiner boat dock for our final two caches. A little over 3 miles for this trip.

Left Gardiner put-in and headed to Steamboat Island battling against the tide a little bit but not too bad. Once again, the cache was easily found then we were off to Cliffhanger….which looked a LONG ways away! It took awhile to get across the river to the north bank again but the time went by rather quickly as we chatted and joked about many things. For me, this would be one of the best parts of the whole experience.

Cliffhanger would be the one difficult cache of the day - so difficult in fact that it could not be found due to soil debris that had fallen from the steep cliffs directly on top of the cache! Emailed the owner for permission to replace the cache. Okay with our old friend, Mackie! We put together a new cache using the brand new water-proof box I had just bought for this outing and whatever swag we could scrape together.

It seems we could have timed the tides a little better as we noticed the tide changed while we had been looking and replacing the cache. We would have to paddle against the tide on the return trip as well! Darren and Eric hugged the shoreline more than I did and as a result I ended up working harder than I needed to…...lesson learned - ALWAYS paddle like a DUCK!

Once back at the truck with kayaks loaded, Darren reported nearly nine miles on the day! It wore me out but it was another great day out caching with good friends. Very cool!

Before heading home we checked out Bedrock’s in Reedsport for some much needed nourishment….of the pizza kind! Sad to discover the geocache inside was missing!

Long day caching in Roseburg with Bad Duck.

We didn’t get a very early start but we made up for it by not returning home until nearly midnight! Uh, addicted?....no, we’re not addicted!

After picking off a few between Coquille and Winston, we drop into Roseburg and hunt down a few as we make our way to a hobby shop so Darren could pick up some RC parts. Dinner at Abby’s Pizza then we hit the road again aiming for a large series of caches called “Memories of Old Highway 99…” as we head home via Sutherlin/Elkton. We didn’t have a great deal of luck with this series….several seemed to be missing.

One cache (Desert Thunder) really had us going and we spent FAR too long looking but it was one that just got in our heads and we didn’t want to leave without getting it! In the end we had to tuck our tails and log a DNF! Later, the cache owner emailed me and gave me more of a hint - yes, it was there and now I know where to look next time.

Another fun one was “Where is the whitevette?” cache. I shouldn’t give away too much here but it wasn’t discovered until Darren decided he was thirsty and needed something to drink.

Yes, a long day but certainly a fun day. Thirty smiley faces for me .... but who’s counting?

    Rub-a-dub-dub,
    Three men in a tub…....

Well, it wasn’t the butcher, baker or candlestick maker but “three men in a tub” certainly describes my caching excursion today with Bad Duck and Pastor Lamar!

Two caches in our sights: I can see it from here! and Anatidae’s Island (both placed by Mr. Copper, I might add)

Once again, a VIDEO will prove quite informative and entertaining…...

Now that video only showed the hunt for “I can see it from here!” cache.

After successfully logging the cache we moved on to Anatidae’s Island. Since the “boat” could only handle two people we had to go out in pairs. Bad Duck and I rowed out first but weren’t having any luck finding the cache. Twenty minutes into looking Bad Duck decides to row back and pick up Pastor Lamar for additional eyes. I continued the hunt for several minutes and finally checked a spot I looked at once before and there it was! But it was under a foot of water, turned upside down and contents soaked and scattered! I collected everything and made my way back to the island edge where I could see my compadres and began waving wildly to show them I had found it. The problem was they weren’t looking….they weren’t even in the boat coming to help! No…they were talking with two guys on the shore! I’m thinking “what is this?...Don’t they care I’m stuck out here on the island? Don’t they care it’s starting to rain? Hmmmm?”

Only after Darren and Rich finally returned did I discover the guys on shore were actually police officers who were responding to a citizen call reporting possible boating violations! Funny thing was the two officers were geocachers themselves! Funnier yet, one of them was the cache owner….Mr. Copper! Apparently when the call came in, they jumped at the chance to have some fun busting law-breaking cachers! Turns out we were quite legal and as Darren stated in his log….they “didn’t get to use the Tazer on Rich”. LOL So Darren rows me back to shore so I can get back to work and there he repairs the cache. I say goodbye and begin driving off as Darren starts rowing back to get Rich when I hear him holler something I can’t understand and raises one of the oars in the air. I smile politely, wave and continue on my way. Only later would I learn what he actually hollered….“Cheap Oar! Broke It!” Now I felt really bad. He did manage to extract Rich from the island and return to shore okay but I don’t think I want to know what he was thinking the whole time about me driving off just as the oar broke!

Poor Bad Duck - everytime he gets in that little boat he ends up talking with law enforcement! Hey Darren, let’s try kayaks next time okay?

Sure was glad to get a couple of these water access caches. Fun morning with friends!

Maybe this post should have been named “To Brookings and Back” because the hike described below was only a part of a full day of caching from Coos Bay to Brookings. The cast of characters included Bad Duck (chauffeur and attired in rarely seen long pants), Family Explorer (Rod only, supplier of enthusiasm and chief story teller) and myself. We were joined mid-morning by our caching pal from Brookings, trailsailor, just south of Gold Beach for a hike on the 333 Trail.

Standing around BS’ing after the hike

This trail is so named for the US Highway 101 mile marker located at the trail head. It actually is a connector trail for the popular Oregon Coast Trail (OCT). Roughly, it’s a 3.5 mile looping trail in the shape of a triangle with one tip at the trail head and the base at the beach 600 feet in elevation below.

There are a total of nine geocaches along this trail. Only Bad Duck would actually get to log all nine this day since Rod and I had previously found some of them and trailsailor placed many of them.

Instead of writing a long story about this adventure, I’ll let this VIDEO do the talking…...

Okay, I’ll tell you Bad Duck’s theory about the the trail’s name. He thinks it’s called the the 333 trail because it’s 3 miles long, takes 3 hours to walk and you loose 3 pints of blood! That’s his story and he’s sticking to it!

After this hike, we part company with trailsailor and continued south picking off as many non-hiking caches as we could squeeze in until dark…..at which time we headed into Brookings for some dinner then back home. Long day, fun day…...reaffirmed what I wrote about the fun of group caching in my 2009 summary post from a few days ago!

        label="2009" />

At the center of my thoughts and reflections from this past year is the tremendous fun I had caching in groups. And it’s not just me - I’ve been hearing the same sentiment from several other geocachers. For me, it seems to have stemmed from our weekly geo-coffee gathering. Friendships forged there have led to more joint caching excursions…leading to geo-coffee attendance growing….leading to even more group excursions. I’m not sure which came first, the “chicken or the egg”! Regardless, some of the most enjoyable caching I did this year was when accompanied by other cachers:

First and foremost are the many weekend and day trips with my bride, the lovely and talented Mrs. Popop! Though not very interested in geocaching, she is fun to be around and we have such a great time together exploring this beautiful state. She tolerates my obsession. The fun for her is capturing nature’s beauty with her camera while I look under rocks and in hollow logs for the elusive geocache.

The very first cache of the year was, in fact, a group effort. Two is a group, right? Running out in the middle of the night with Bad Duck hunting down a newly published puzzle cache by ottontots - Peeping Tom - would be a common geocaching mode throughout the year. These spontaneous joint First-To-Find hunts are always fun. We didn’t actually find the cache that night but spent about three hours running all over town testing our theories making it pretty easy next day.

January had two more excursions - one to Camas Valley with Bad Duck and one to Florence with knightcb. Neither produced very many finds but were enjoyable outings chatting with good friends.

No group caching in February but March started with a run to Roseburg with Bad Duck where we accomplished a 5/5 geocache (not really rated correctly but we took it!). The geocaching mode used today was a simple one - just hunt the next closest cache on either of our GPSr screen…..all day. No route planning, no Google Earth scoping….just hit the “Next” button and go. Ended the day with the obligitory ice cream stop at DQ before heading back to the coast.

Events often produce opportunites to go group caching. Two events stand out from this year. One held in April at the little community of Azalea along I-5 hosted by California cachers honoring Oregon cachers. Though running around with a caravan of about 4 vehicles and a dozen people after the event was fun….the most memorable moment of the day was when I stopped at a rest area to hunt a cache and locked my keys inside my pickup! Fellow cachers came to the rescue and we managed to “break” in and retrieve the keys! Sheeesh! Then in late July we hosted a unique day of events - two events in one day! First was a breakfast event in Bandon, followed by a day of caching in groups and concluding with a dinner event in Winchester Bay. I “grouped” up with Rod of family explorer to find caches on the dunes and high in trees!

Black Point near Brookings

Geocaching brings you in contact with people you would never likely have ever met before. Tincuphunter is a geocacher from the greater Portland area and frequently caches along the coast. We had exchanged emails over the past couple of years regarding caches we both had found and planned to go hiking and caching together some day. A Memorial Day weekend visit to Portland late May was the perfect opportunity to make good on this goal. We hiked the Marquam Nature Park to find several caches including one I needed for progress in the Oregon History Challenge cache. A new friend was made that day. Later in the summer I organized a long hike and caching excursion in the Lakeside area for him and a friend of his. Two other local cachers joined us for a tiring but fulfilling day hunting some Mackie caches.

In attendance (left to right):tincuphunter (Dick) from Beaverton;MrWalkie (Eric) from St. Helens, WA;Charlie ‘n’ Sue (actually only Charlie came);knightcb (Chuck);myself

An early June outing with Rod was the most time-consuming and far-ranging adventure of the year. NO fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants mode for this trip! We had a specific route with very specific caches to find. The impetus for this trip was to make as much headway towards completing three challenge caches as possible. Counting Counties in Oregon, Oregon DeLorme and Oregon History challenge caches. Two days with an overnight camp in LaPine State Park. We logged 1100 miles and nearly 50 caches. No, that’s not a lot of caches for driving 1100 miles but as I said we had specific counties, DeLorme map pages and geocaches to find. It was a nice break from the coastal caching exposing us to some really picturesque country in Central and Southern Oregon.

Some group caching experiences are with non-caching people. Such was the case in July while camping with church friends in Powers. A traditional hike to Hanging Rock yielded the opportunity to show a sizable group what geoaching was all about.

There are geocaches that involve long hikes, bushwhacking, challenging terrain, getting wet and cold and otherwise unpleasant conditions. Hunting these caches alone could be discouraging to the point of not being eager to even attempt them. But going along with some compadres - now that’s a different story! Several excursions come to mind as I recall 2009. Hunting Elusive Butterfly with Bad Duck and knightcb - Jolly Roger with Bad Duck - Black Point with Bad Duck, emeljay and MonkeyJunky - and most recently skull-n-bones with Rod and Mr. Copper. All these were much more fun having done them with fellow cachers.

Mr. Copper & Rod taking a break from the Skull n Bones bushwhack

New in 2009 was exposure to night caches. I did my very first one alone but the other two were with groups…...way more fun in a group!

Now, I still got out plenty of times alone. I had my share of long dune hikes, after work quickies and day trips to outlying areas like Florence, Gold Beach and Roseburg. But as the year came to a close, this geocaching with others seemed to happen more and more. It was something several others had mentioned as well - how much more fun geocaching was when done with fellow cachers. Now when I think about my next geocaching adventure I start thinking who might want to come along - quite a change for me, but enjoyable.

Today I walked about 5 miles of dune trails on the North Spit area. This was my second trip out because I couldn’t get all the trails covered the first time…..and I still need another day to wrap it up. This is quite a maze of trails. I have some ideas for planting some new caches out here once I get the trail locations recorded and sent off to the project manager.
