Final Day of 2010 - Kentucky Falls Hike

On the final day of 2010 Pat and I, along with hiking/geocaching/photography friends Darren and Steven, planned a trek to Kentucky Falls in the North Fork Smith River drainage.

There had been storms the week prior and with traveling to nearly 2500 feet elevation getting to the trail head, we expected to see some snow…..and were not disappointed!

Palouse Creek Falls

Neither rain nor wind shall slow the intrepid geocacher on his GPS-pointed rounds! Today was a fine example of that altruism. Darren and I made an afternoon trek up Palouse Creek for some caches (including one that hadn’t been found yet) and to enjoy the spawning coho salmon were putting on right now. There is a back story however…......

Local geocacher riverangler had called us out….right there on the cache page for the whole world to see! It’s not there now but it basically was chiding us for not getting out there sooner to look for his cache series up Palouse Creek (a very cool place to check out btw when the salmon are spawning).

Despite the wind and light rain, we donned our hip waders and struck out from the trail head up Haynes Inlet. Darren was armed with his son’s new waterproof video cam to give it a good test - in Palouse Creek to record the fishies!.....among other things.

Darren has a nice video of the excursion here on his Facebook page. I’ll try to get a YouTube version to replace it soon.

Beaver Creek Natural Area - Oregon’s Newest Park

This brand new state natural area (no camping) enticed Pat and I to hook up the trailer and spend the weekend in the Newport area. It was being promoted as a great place to paddle a kayak and view lots of wildlife. The Drops family joined us at South Beach State Park. It was rainy Thursday when we arrived but Friday looked like the best day to do the paddle. After Darren and family arrived and got their trailer set up, he joined Pat and I at Ona Beach wayside where we put the kayaks in and ventured up Beaver Creek for the last two hours of the day - wisedh we had more time and better weather! Next summer!

Great afternoon paddle!
